때때로, 공간은 '쓰여진다'. 이는 좀 더 구체적으로 말하면, 공간이 텍스트, 숫자, 그리고 기호를 통해 기술되고 형성된다는 것을 의미한다. 공간은 단순히 물질적인 것만은 아니다. 지금 내가 이 글을 쓰고 있는 이 지점 또한, 텍스트와 정보로 이루어진 하나의 공간이라고 할 수 있다. 그것은 곧 '정보적 공간(informational space)'이다. 나는 지난 글에서 ‘정보적 경관 (informative landscape)’—또는 '제3의 자연(third nature)'이라 불리는 개념—에 대해 언급한 바 있다. 우리가 살고 있는 세상을 이해하기 위해서는, 가상 공간에서 벌어지는 일들을 파악하지 않고서는 불가능하다. 실제로 위대한 과학적 발견과 깨달음은 최종적으로 종이에 텍스트의 형태로 쓰여져야만, 다른 과학자들이나 대중이 그것을 이해할 수 있게 된다. 이러한 기록에는 도표나 기호 등이 포함되기도 한다.

물론 공간이 물리적으로 존재한다는 사실을 부정하는 것은 아니지만, 그것이 홀로 존재하는 것은 아니다. 공간은 다양한 이해관계자들과 그들의 목표, 그리고 그 사이의 협상 과정에 의해 형성된다. 누군가가 한 장소에 서서 그것을 물리적으로 상상할 수도 있고, 또 다른 누군가는 그 장소를 화폐적 가치로 계산하면서—그 장소가 실제로 존재하지 않는 시점일지라도—그 공간을 상상할 수도 있다. 이런 식으로 상상된 공간들은 본질적으로 같은 장소를 가리키지만, 표현 방식이 다를 뿐이다. 어떤 방식으로 표현되었는지는 중요하지 않다. 중요한 것은, 그 장소가 다양한 표현들이 여러 차원에서 축적됨으로써 어떤 방식으로든 존재하게 된다는 점이다.

이처럼, 내가 지금 쓰고 있는 이 블로그 공간은 나의 텍스트, 사진, 그리고 생각으로 구성된 '쓰여지는 공간'이다.

나는 이 블로그에서 ‘공간’ 자체와 관련된 주제를 다루고 있다. 이 블로그를 시작한 것은 약 2~3년 전이다. 처음 이 블로그를 시작한 이유는 공간적 맥락에서 ‘경관(Landscape)’에 관심 있는 사람들과 소통하고 싶었기 때문이다. 이 목표는 지금도 변함이 없다. 지금까지 여러 글을 쓰면서 나는 글쓰기 자체가 주는 여러 장점도 깨닫게 되었다. 오늘은 내가 왜 이곳, ‘쓰여지는 공간’에 글을 쓰는지, 그리고 왜 단순한 경험 공유를 넘어 나만의 해석을 포함한 다양한 공간 이론들을 나누고 싶은지를 세 가지 관점에서 이야기해보고자 한다. 궁극적으로는, 이 ‘쓰여지는 공간’이 우리가 장소를 다시 생각하고 체험하는 데 어떤 핵심적인 역할을 할 수 있는지를 말하고자 한다.

1. 글쓰기는 장소를 더 깊이 이해하게 한다.

충분한 시간 동안 생각하고 집중하며 그 장소에 대해 글을 쓰는 과정은, 자신이 그곳에서 느꼈던 감정이나 인식을 되짚는 계기를 제공한다. 때때로, 글쓰기를 통해 인식의 틀이 재구성되기도 한다. 장소를 다시 생각하고, 다시 구성하며, 다시 정의하는 과정은 장소를 인식하는 능력을 확장시키는 데 도움이 되는 중요한 훈련이다.

2. 장소의 배경 이야기를 배울 수 있게 한다.

어떤 장소를 더 깊이 이해하고 싶다면, 우리는 그 장소 뒤에 숨겨진 이야기를 알아야 한다. 그러한 이야기들은 당시 그 장소가 실제로 어떤 곳이었는지를 보여준다. 역사는 장소의 상징이 되며, ‘역사성(historicity)’을 가지는 것은 장소성을 형성하고, 장소 애착을 가능하게 한다. 따라서, 그 장소의 이야기를 배우는 것은 진정한 장소를 포착하기 위한 핵심적인 열쇠가 될 수 있다.

3. 관점과 경험의 공유는 사고의 확장을 가능하게 한다.

특히 텍스트와 이미지 같은 형태를 통해 생각을 공유하는 것은, 사람들의 사고방식에 영향을 줄 수 있다. 독자들은 작가의 관점에 영향을 받을 수도 있지만, 그럼에도 불구하고 여전히 자신의 인식을 다시 구성할 기회를 갖는다. 예를 들어, 조금 더 깊이 읽어본다면 독자들은 작가가 장소를 인식해 가는 흐름을 따라가볼 수 있으며, 장소에 대한 단편적인 정보들도 얻게 될 수 있다.

이러한 이유들로, 나는 지금까지 공간과 관련되어 온 모든 것들과 더불어, 세상을 '공간 그 자체'로 어떻게 해석할 수 있을지에 대한 나 자신의 해석을 담아, 공간에 대해 계속해서 글을 써 나가고자 한다.

Sometimes space is written. What this means more in detail, space is described and formed by text, number and symbols. Space is not merely a physical material.

At this point, where I am writing now could be seen as a space created by text and information. It is an informational space. I referred in my last post to 'informative nature', also called 'third nature'. We cannot interpret the world we live in without understanding what happens in virtual space. The great scientific findings and moments of enlightenment must ultimately be recorded in the form of text on paper, so that fellow scientists and the public can understand them. Such documentation often includes charts and symbols. It is not denied that space also exists physically, but not in isolation. They are formed by interest groups, their objectives, and shaped by negotiation.

Someone standing in a particular spot can imagine it physically, while someone calculating its value in monetary terms can imagine the same place—even if it doesn’t physically exist at that moment. These imagined places are essentially the same, only expressed differently. It doesn't matter how the place is expressed, in whatever form. A much more important point is that the place exists in some way, constructed through the accumulation of various expressions across multiple dimensions.

This written space—my blog—is composed of my own texts, pictures, and thoughts.

I'm writing here in this Blog about something related to "space" itself. Since almost 2-3 years ago I started this blog. My starting reason was to communicate with people who are interested in landscape within a spatial context. It remains unchanged. During writing articles so far, I have also come to recognize the advantages of writing itself. Today I'd like to explain three points in detail—why I write here, specifically in a 'written space,' and why I want to share not only my experiences but also various spatial theories, including my own interpretations. Ultimately it comes down to why written space plays a key role in rethinking and experiencing place.

First of all, it helps deepen our understanding of a place. With enough time to think and to concentrate, writing about the place leads to personal reflection on what you were feeling and recognizing there by recalling that time and space. Sometimes through writing, a reframing takes place. Re-thinking, re-framing, and re-defining the place are all benefits for developing the skills that equip us with a broader perspective to recognize the place.

Second, it helps us learn the specific background stories of a place. If we would like to learn more about the place, we must know the stories behind it, which reveal the real character of that place at the time. The history represents a symbol of that place. And having historicity helps to form placeness and place attachment. Thus, learning the story of a place can be a crucial key to understanding it.

Third, sharing perspectives and experiences could contribute to expanding people’s thinking, especially in forms such as texts and pictures. They might be affected by the writer’s point of view. Nevertheless, they still have the opportunity to reframe their own perception. For example, they can figure out, if they look more closely, the flow of the writer's understanding about the place, and they can also learn fragmentary pieces of information about the place.

For these reasons, I would like to continue to write about space, everything that relates to space so far, and my own perception—how I can interpret the world as space itself.
